North Bend Native Jared Lee Recognized at Capital Honors Convocation

2014 Apr 17

Jared Lee, a graduate of Taylor High School and member of the Capital University baseball team, was one of eight student-athletes to earn university or college awards Wednesday at the institution's Honors Convocation at Mees Hall Auditorium on campus.

Lee, a Integrated Social Studies AYA major, garnered one of the school's most prestigious awards, which recognize outstanding performance in scholarship, extracurricular activities and/or other leadership roles.

Capital University seniors Maggie Donnellan and Bob Weisgarber earned the highest athletic honors.

Weisgarber, a member of the men's soccer team, earned the William F. Bernlohr Award for achievement in athletics and scholarship, as well as responsibility, leadership and religious principles. Donnellan, a women's soccer standout, was named winner of the Gene Slaughter Award for Athletic and Academic Excellence.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Weisgarber became the first student-athlete in men's soccer program history to be named a Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He was selected Ohio Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, first team All-OAC and second team All-Great Lakes Region by the NSCAA after finishing among the top two in the OAC in save percentage (.820), saves per match (5.26), total saves (100) and solo shutouts (6). Weisgarber finished with a 9-7-3 record in helping lead the Crusaders to the OAC Tournament semifinals.

During the season, Weisgarber also posted two assists and a goal that earned a nomination for "The One", the top play of the day on the nationally syndicated Fox Sports 1 show "Fox Sports Live". The tally came in the final minutes of regulation and held up as the game-winner in Capital's 2-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace in an OAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Nov. 4.

A biology major, Weisgarber graduated in December with a 3.88 grade point average. He was involved with several on- and off-campus organizations during his tenure as a student, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Nationwide Children's Hospital Cardiac Center and Citizens for Humane Action.

Donnellan became the only first team NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-America selection in women's soccer program history after earning OAC Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the third straight season and leading Capital to a school-record 19 wins and the NCAA Tournament national semifinal. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native, who was also named a Scholar All-American by the NSCAA, ranked in the top 15 in the nation in save percentage and led the conference with 151 saves, finishing with a 19-5-2 record and eight solo shutouts.

In Capital's victory at then-No. 1 Washington (Mo.) on Nov. 24, Donnellan collected a career-high 18 saves and stopped three of five penalty kicks while converting one of her own to help the team advance to the NCAA semifinals. She didn't allow a goal in her first four postseason matches to help the Crusaders win the OAC Tournament title for the second time in three years.

Donnellan currently carries a 3.50 GPA and will graduate this spring with a bachelor's in middle childhood education. She also serves as a volunteer coach for Columbus East Soccer Association (CESA) and as a club coach in Reynoldsburg.

Four other student-athletes received university awards Wednesday.

Baseball senior Nate Campbell (Latrobe, Pa.) earned the Faculty Leadership Award for the Outstanding Senior Man for his leadership and academic achievement, and cross country senior Shelby Rohr (Nova, Ohio) picked up the Outstanding Senior Leader Award (Woman) for outstanding leadership and service to Capital University students.

Women's golf senior Jessica DeBelly (Sylvania, Ohio) was named winner of the James L. and E. Marlene Bruning Award for undergraduate research, while volleyball/softball junior LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) collected the Legacy Scholarship Award for academic achievement and participation in extracurricular activities by a student with ancestral legacy at Capital University.

College award winners included women's soccer senior Madison Palmer (Spring Arbor, Mich.), who won the Outstanding Student Achievement in the Visual Arts Award, and baseball senior Jared Lee (North Bend, Ohio), who garnered the To King Kwan Teacher Education Award for the outstanding senior in adolescent/young adult education.
