Newark Native Alyssa Patznick Named OAC Player of the Week

2014 Mar 4

Alyssa Patznick, a Newark native and member of the Capital University softball team, was recognized Tuesday as an Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week following a 6-2 week for the Crusaders during their spring break trip in Clermont, Fla.

Sophomore shortstop Therese Becker (South Euclid, Ohio) was named Hitter of the Week, while junior pitcher Alyssa Patznick (Newark, Ohio) earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Patznick garnered Hitter of the Week honors in 2012. Becker is a first-time Player of the Week.

Playing in her first week in a starting role after the graduation last spring of two-time All-American and four-year starter Devan Boggs, Becker hit .500 (13-for-26) with team-highs of four doubles, nine runs batted in and 20 total bases. She posted four multi-hit games during the stretch, including a 5-for-6 performance against Johnson St. (Vt.) on Friday.

Becker also exhibited strong play defensively, committing just one error during the trip and leading the team with 13 assists.

Patznick finished the trip with a 4-1 record in six appearances, including five starts. She tossed three complete games, including one shutout, and recorded a 2.07 earned run average and 28 strikeouts.

In the team's second game against Alma (Mich.) on Feb. 24, Patznick allowed just one run on three hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort, a 7-1 Capital win. She shut out Lyndon St. (Vt.) on Thursday, surrendering just two hits and striking out five in a 15-0 Crusader victory in five innings.

Capital resumes play March 14-15 at the Salisbury (Md.) Tournament.

Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
