Maineville Native Maggie Donnellan Selected All-OAC

2013 Nov 19

Capital Unviersity women's soccer student-athlete Maggie Donnellan, a native of Maineville, OH, was one of seven Crusaders recognized for their achievements by the Ohio Athletic Conference last week as the league released its 2013 All-OAC Women's Soccer teams and individual award winners.

Seniors Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Hilary Ells (Grandview Heights, Ohio) earned Player of the Year accolades. Donnellan was named OAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the third consecutive season, while Ells was tabbed OAC Forward of the Year, the second Crusader to earn that award in the last three years.

Freshman midfielder Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) joined Donnellan and Ells on the first team, while senior defender Corey McClellan (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore defender Mariah Richards (Canton, Ohio) earned second team honors.

Freshman midfielder Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.) received All-OAC honorable mention merits.

Third-year head coach Chris Kouns was selected OAC Coach of the Year by his coaching peers. Kouns has led Capital to a 18-4-1 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the conference. The Crusaders shared the OAC regular season championship and won the OAC Tournament title with a 4-0 victory over John Carroll in the championship match at Bernlohr Stadium.

Making its fifth-ever appearance and second in the last three years in the NCAA Division III Tournament, Capital reached the Round of 16 for the first time in school history over the weekend, defeating the University of Chicago and No. 16 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by identical scores of 1-0. The team's win over Whitewater was the 18th of the year, a program record.

"I am very pleased with the OAC Coach of the Year honor, but not just for my efforts being recognized," Kouns said. "Rather, I see this honor as confirmation that our coaching staff as a whole did a terrific job this year maximizing the potential that we possessed. Without Ian Pena, Katie Robinson and Andrea Kaminski, I could not have led the team to our second and third OAC championships in three years or our second NCAA Tournament trip in that same time.

"I also see this honor as recognition of every player in the program who was not given the official 'All-OAC' title. It truly is their daily efforts that make things work, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by those types of student-athletes."

The Crusaders continue postseason play this Saturday against No. 14 Thomas More (Ky.) at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Match time is slated for 2:30 p.m. EST.
