Columbus Native Caitlin Prange Named OAC Athlete of the Week

2014 Jan 13

Caitlin Prange, a member of the Capital University track and field team and graduate of Worthington Kilbourne High School, was selected as an Ohio Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday, Jan. 13.

Senior thrower Paul Baker (Ashland, Ohio) of the men's team was tabbed OAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. On the women's side, senior sprinter Caitlin Prange (Columbus, Ohio) garnered OAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors, while freshman thrower Ashley Freshkorn (Columbus, Ohio) earned OAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week accolades.

Each of the two teams finished second out of six teams at Saturday's Capital Challenge at the Capital Center Field House.

Baker posted a pair of top-three finishes in throwing events. He placed second out of 17 competitors in the shot put with a toss of 47-09.75, and finished third out of 13 in the weight throw with a mark of 43-10.00.

Prange, who was an OAC Track Athlete of the Week in March of last season, recorded a pair of runner-up finishes and helped lead the 4x200-meter relay team to first place in a time of 1:52.70. She placed second out of 10 runners in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.09, and finished second of 18 in the 200-meter dash in 26.60 seconds.

Prange's times in the 60 and 200 each currently rank in the top 40 in the nation. Her 200 mark is good for 12th, while her time in the 60 is 37th.

Freshkorn posted a school-record throw of 48-11.00 in the weight throw to finish second in the 11-athlete field. She won the shot put with a toss of 37-08.00, besting eight other competitors in the event.

Freshkorn's mark in the weight throw is currently the No. 8 time in the nation.

The Crusaders return to action this Saturday at the Otterbein Invitational.

Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
