Columbus Native Bob Weisgarber Named Academic All-American by NSCAA

2013 Dec 19

Bob Weisgarber, a senior at Capital University and graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School, has been selected a third team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Men's Scholar All-American in the College Division, the organization announced Wednesday, Dec. 18.

A biology/pre-med major from Columbus, Ohio, Weisgarber is one of just 33 student-athletes at the NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA levels to earn a spot on the three college division teams. The goalkeeper recorded a 3.92 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale through the spring 2013 semester.

Weisgarber, who earned Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference merits for the third consecutive season, is the first Academic All-American in Capital men's soccer program history.

To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA throughout their career, started more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team.

A three-year captain and four-year starter, Weisgarber enjoyed his finest season as a Crusader in leading Capital to a 9-8-3 overall mark and an appearance in the OAC Tournament semifinals, where the team nearly knocked off OAC regular season and tournament champion Ohio Northern.

Weisgarber was named OAC Goalkeeper of the Year and first team All-OAC after posting a 9-7-3 record and helping the Crusaders total seven shutouts. He led the conference and ranked among the top 75 in the nation with a .820 save percentage, and placed second in the league in both saves (100) and saves per match (5.26).

Weisgarber also tied for the team lead with two assists and recorded the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of Capital's 2-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace in the OAC Tournament quarterfinals. His goal, which was struck from more than 60 yards out, was highlighted on Fox Sports 1's "Fox Sports Live". Weisgarber was also recently selected first team NSCAA College Division Men's Scholar All-East Region and second team Division III All-Ohio by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA).

All Academic All-Americans will be recognized Saturday, Jan. 18, at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in conjunction with the 2014 NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia.
