Columbus Native Bob Weisgarber Earns OAC's Highest Honor

Bob Weisgarber, a Columbus, OH, native and senior at Capital University, was named an Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde A. Lamb Award recipient Monday evening at the conference's annual Awards Banquet at the Holiday Inn in Worthington.

Maggie Donnellan, a three-time OAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the women's soccer team, and Bob Weisgarber, the reigning OAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the men's soccer team, were two of 20 student-athletes to earn the league's highest honor for athletic and academic excellence.

The Clyde Lamb Awards are presented annually to a single male and a single female from each conference institution. Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.

Donnellan and Weisgarber also earned Capital's highest athletic accolades at last month's Honors Convocation. Weisgarber was selected the William F. Bernlohr Award winner for achievement in athletics and scholarship, as well as responsibility, leadership and religious principles. Donnellan was named winner of the Gene Slaughter Award for Athletic and Academic Excellence.

Donnellan (Kings Mills High School) garnered both Academic and Athletic All-America honors after leading the women's soccer team to the NCAA Division III Tournament national semifinals for the first time in school history and a program-record 19 wins. The four-time All-OAC selection ranked among the top 15 in the nation in save percentage and led the conference with 151 saves. Donnellan also recorded eight solo shutouts, including five in a row down the stretch to help the Crusaders clinch the OAC regular season championship and league tournament title.

Also an academic all-conference and all-region pick, Donnellan graduated earlier this month with a bachelor's in middle childhood education and a 3.50 GPA. She is actively involved with two separate youth organizations as a volunteer coach and was a facilities staff supervisor at Capital for three years.

Weisgarber (St. Francis DeSales High School) earned the men's soccer program's first-ever Scholar All-America honor from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. In addition to Goalkeeper of the Year, Weisgarber was picked All-OAC first team and NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region second team after leading the Crusaders to a 9-7-3 record and an appearance in the OAC Tournament semifinals. He finished in the top two in the OAC in save percentage (.820), saves per match (5.26), total saves (100) and solo shutouts (6), and posted two assists and the game-winning goal against Baldwin Wallace on Nov. 4 on a play featured on the Fox Sports 1 show "Fox Sports Live".

A three-time Academic All-OAC selection, Weisgarber graduated in December with a degree in biology and a 3.88 GPA. He was involved with several on- and off-campus organizations during his career, including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Nationwide Children's Hospital Cardiac Center and Citizens for Humane Action.

Faculty Athletic Representative Sally Creasap, an associate professor of education at Capital, presented Donnellan and Weisgarber with their awards.
