Cleveland Native Shannon Walton Tabbed OAC Defensive Player of the Week

2014 Apr 8

Shannon Walton, a Cleveland native and freshman on the Capital University women's lacrosse team, earned Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week accolades, the league announced Monday, April 7.

Walton, a midfielder and graduate of Magnificat High School, led the Crusaders in ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (5) and tied for a team high with seven draw controls in Capital's 21-8 victory over Hilbert (N.Y.) on Saturday at Bernlohr Stadium. Walton also registered three goals, including the contest's first tally, and two assists on the offensive end.

For the season, Walton, who is the team's third Defensive Player of the Week honoree this year, currently leads the team in ground balls (36), draw controls (24) and caused turnovers (24). She is also second on the team in scoring with 27 points (20 goals, 7 assists).

The Crusaders have won three straight games and are 7-1 just over midway through the program's first varsity season. Capital visits Defiance Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
