Cleveland Native Shannon Walton Earns OAC Defensive Player of the Week

2014 Apr 28

Shannon Walton, a Cleveland native and freshman on the Capital University women's lacrosse team, was selected Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, April 28.

Walton, a midfielder and graduate of Magnificat High School, was a force on both the offensive and defensive ends for the Crusaders in a pair of games last week. On Wednesday at Ursuline, she tallied four goals, two ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers in Capital's 14-3 victory, the team's 10th of the season.

In the Crusaders' regular season finale on Saturday against Baldwin Wallace, Walton scored two goals in the final 11:40 of regulation and added two assists, a team-high six ground balls, one draw control and four caused turnovers. Capital nearly hung on for the win but was outlasted 13-12.

Walton was also named OAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on April 7.

Walton and the Crusaders begin play in the inaugural OAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament this Tuesday in the semifinals against No. 1 seed Mount Union. Capital earned the No. 4 seed in its first-ever varsity season.

Heading into postseason play, Walton ranks second on the team in scoring with 45 points (34 goals, 11 assists) and leads the team in ground balls (53)

Each week, OAC coaches and sports information directors nominate student-athletes for each sport in season for the award.
